Heiland - Chorale Cantata for the 1st Sunday in Advent

Genre : Cantata
Comment : Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (Come
Redeemer of the Gentiles) / / Cantata 61 / / First Sunday In Advent / Epistle:
Romans xiii. 11-14 (Our salvation is nearer than we believe) / Gospel: Matthew
xxi. 1-9 (Christ's entry into Jerusalem) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1 /
/ The opening chorus of cantata BWV 61 grandly introduces the tune of Luther's
hymn tune Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland with a fine dotted rhythm accompaniment.
Having got the theme out of the way, it's down to business with a fugue. It's
nice to know that there are things in life that you can rely upon. A recitative
is followed by a lovely tenor aria in triple time. The violins get a pretty and
lush tune in accompaniment. Next a recitative. Usually I pass over recitatives
without comment, after all a recit. is a recit. isn't it? This next one, though,
is a peach. Pizzicato chords accompanying Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
OK, so maybe it's corny but I like it. The final aria is given to the soprano
soloist. This is a lovely and delicate aria and the soloist must show great
sensitivity to get the most from it. / / When I first heard Harnoncourt's
recording in the Teldec series, I thought that the poor boy treble was badly
under-rehearsed but I've grown to like it, since his slightly lispy voice makes
it sound rather cute! Also, the words are Open wide, my heart, Jesus is coming
and entering in, so it seems rather appropriate that it's sung by someone
sounding sweet and innocent rather than sophisticated. / / My only regret
about the closing chorus is that it doesn't go on for longer. It's one of those
off-to-the-races pieces upon which amateur choral societies love to work up a
head of steam. A glorious ending!

2+ / / Cantata BWV 62 may be overshadowed by its more illustrious counterpart
(see BWV 61) but still there is some good music here! The cantata opens with an
attractive orchestral introduction leading into a choral movement built around
the chorale melody, with instrumental ritornelli. The first solo aria falls into
the capable hands of the tenor who should acquit himself with honour in this
fine movement. After a recitative, the bass has a battle aria (Strive and
conquer, Hero bold! May thine arm grow ever stronger) that uses a very curious
effect: The upper strings play with the continuo (sempre col continuo)
throughout emphasising the jagged line that the bass has to sing. A surprise
follows: Expecting a recitative, one really gets an arioso duet. It's most
attractive and effective. The cantata ends with a simple chorale harmonisation.

Comment : Christen, ätzet diesen Tag
(Christians, engrave this day) / / Cantata 63 / / Christmas Day / Epistle:
Titus ii. 11-14 (The grace of God appeared to me) / Gospel: Luke ii. 1-14 (The
Nativity of Christ) / / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1 / / A joyous
cantata, as befits the season! The very large orchestra begins the first chorus
with a festive flourish. One could imagine this piece being performed out of
doors a la Royal Fireworks Music and the choir joins in at the same high level
of energy. A lengthy alto recitative follows and this itself leads into a
delightful duet between soprano and bass (a combination at which Bach excels)
which is introduced by a gorgeously sinuous oboe line. A further recitative
leads to a second duet, this time between alto and tenor. The orchestral strings
provide the very attractive accompaniment. Another recitative and then the full
orchestra is roused again for another high octane chorus. Simple straightforward
and attractive. Bach himself seems to have been fond of this work (or at least
found it useful), revising and reviving it a number of times.

/ / Although it's perhaps not fair to ascribe to the good burghers of Leipzig
the sort of orgiastic frenzy of consumption that accompanies Christmas these
days, one may assume that they at least had the pleasure of a modest material
and spiritual celebration. If so, then this cantata may have been designed to
bring them back down to earth with a bump! The theme of this severe piece is
most decidedly the worthlessness of earthly things. The excellent opening chorus
is in motet style with the opening fugal theme reminding these ears of the
opening theme of cantata BWV 61, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. The next three
movements (chorale, recitative, chorale) establish the message of earthly
worthlessness and spiritual redemption. There's a lovely touch in the second of
the chorales with the continuo given a walking bass line. This section leads
into the musical heart of the cantata. The first (soprano) aria is accompanied
by a fast, attractive theme on the violins that is woven intricately into the
fabric of the movement and after a recitative, the alto aria is introduced by a
delicious theme from the oboe d'amore. Perhaps this movement outstays it's
welcome a little bit but it is still very attractive. The cantata closes with a
setting of the first verse of Johann Frank's Jesu, meine Freude.

Comment : Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen (All
those from Sheba shall come) / / Cantata 65 / / Epiphany / Epistle: Isaah lx.
1-16 (The Gentiles shall come to your light) / Gospel: Matthew ii. 1-12 (The
wise men seek Christ) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1* / / In a similar
vein to BWV 1, this is a very happy cantata (which it should be, given the
Gospel story that it follows). I hesitated before giving this a starred rating
because this isn't one of those pieces that sends shivers down my spine (my
primary guide as to when to give a star). Rather, it is tremendous fun to sing!
The opening chorus is one of the best, with tremendously exciting fugal writing.
And what's that being played by the horns in bar five and sung by the choir five
bars before the end? Sounds like wo ist dein Sieg from Denn wir haben in the
Brahms Requiem. Hm, I wonder! There follows chorale, recitative and an
attractive aria in which the giving of the gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense
is portrayed. Then there is a superb, supercharged tenor aria: Very hard to stop
myself from singing along! The chorale Ei, nun, mein Gott, so fall'ich dir
finishes the cantata. / / Sie Werden aus Saba gives a very good illustration
of the reflective discourse upon the subject matter that occurs in the best of
the cantatas. Not only is the story of the giving of the gifts told but there is
also a very personal, intimate reflection of the struggle going on the Soul. The
first aria starts: Gold is not enough…away with empty gifts…, the following
recitative is almost saying "it's not the gift, but the thought that counts" and
so on. There is a build up of tension followed by resolution in the libretto,
mirrored by tension-resolution in the music.
